HAIR TRANSPLANTATION WITH FUE and DHI METHOD

What is FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)?

It is the name of the technique used in hair transplantations in Turkey as well as globally. This name was given after the micromotor or the other grafting technique for collecting hair.

Early hair loss is common in men as the hair follicles on top of the head are sensitive to testosterone. However, the hair follicles in the nape region are not susceptible to this hormone. Therefore, the hair follicles in this area are resilient and they won’t shed away. Hair transplantation is the transfer of these hair follicles in the nape region to the area of hair shedding.

FUE technique is the most common hair transplantation method as it is both painless and successful.

The first question that comes to mind when patients begin to research on hair transplantation is how many hair follicles will be planted. At this point they usually encounter the term graft.

Graft is the name of the hair-bearing tissue that is transplanted into the scalp. This structure comprises of hair roots and some skin. A single graft can house two, three even four hair follicles. The number is proportional to the size of the graft that is transplanted.

Yet, to determine the correct size of the graft is very crucial in order to prevent scars in the areas where it is harvested and where it is planted back.

For this reason, hair transplantation process has to be carried out by expert hands regarding each patient’s respective hair structure.

Are There Any Techniques Other Than FUE?

There is also another method called DHI (Direct Hair Implant) or a Choi Implant used in hair transplants.

The most distinctive feature that differentiates the DHI from FUE is that the site creation and graft implantation are performed simultaneously, i.e. extraction and implantation are combined as part of a one or two step process, embedding the extracted hair follicles directly into the receipt areas with the help of a specially pointed pen (Choi Implanter Pen) without the need of creating channel incisions. Therefore, it is also referred to as the Pen Technique.

Operational procedures are the same as in the FUE technique except channel creation. Hair follicles are planted to the area using a specially pointed device. The Implanter has a thin and sharp pen-point in which a hair follicle can be easily inserted.

Implantation takes longer, is more laborious and costly when compared to FUE technique. There is no significant difference between the results of two methods. In Kaş Medical Center, hair transplantation can be carried out using all methods. It must be handled by expert hands in order to ensure a good result.

Will any scars be left after the FUE intervention?

The other reason why this technique is preferred lies in the fact that it does not leave any scars besides its other advantages. Following the interventions performed with this technique, no scars remain permanent in the area of transplantation and in the areas where grafts are collected.

Is it a painful procedure for the patient?

As the procedure is performed under local anesthesia, no pain will be felt.

How long does the FUE technique last?

The duration of the procedure may vary depending on the number of the follicles to be transplanted and on the hair structure of the patient. An average of 4 000 to 6 000 grafts are transplanted at each procedure and each session lasts 6 to 8 hours on average. Splitting the procedure, which can actually be completed in one session, to two or three days may be exhausting for the patient both, physically and economically. Therefore, hair transplantation operations in our Medical Center are completed in one day. Following one night of complimentary accomodation the patient is discharged next day after the medical dressing is completed.

How Does The Recovery Process After Hair Transplantation Work?

In the hair transplantation process, post-operation period is as important as the surgery itself. After the operation, the planted area should be left open without bandaging and has to be in direct contact with air. Eventually, scabs will start to form in the area and the skin will continue to feed hair follicles within.

Transplantation area must not be rubbed for one week. In addition, the area has to be protected from impacts or hits that may cause trauma.

Activities such as active training exercises that may increase blood circulation should be avoided. The patient is advised to sleep in the sitting position for the first two days in order to protect the hair transplanted area from friction.

On the second day after the transplantation, the patient should visit the Clinic for control and first hair-wash. Here, the patient is informed about the important issues when washing the hair in the coming days. The most critical point during the hair-wash is not to use nails, not to scratch the skin and not to attempt to peel the scabs. Shedding of hair grafts after a hair transplant can be noticed anywhere between 1-5 weeks after the hair transplant procedure.  This period, which is called “shock loss”, is expected to last between 1-3 after the procedure. However, after this period, new hair will eventually grow back again permanently.

How many hair follicles can be transplanted during a session performed with the FUE technique?

With this technique, up to 6000 grafts per day can be transplanted depending on the potential number of the hair in the nape region of the individual.

Can I swim in the sea or in the pool after the operation?

After 15 days following the operation, individuals may swim in the sea or in the pool.

When can I start exercising after the intervention?

Seven days later than the intervention, you can take strolls and perform mild exercises. 2 weeks later, you can start performing your usual exercise program.

How long will it take for me to go back to work?

You can go back to your social life immediately after the intervention. The encrustation in the grafting area in the nape and in the area where transplantation was performed will disappear within a week. Some people prefer not to go back to work during this period required for the encrustation to disappear. This is merely a personal choice.

Are eyebrow and beard transplantations doable by the FUE technique?

Yes, they are. FUE technique is an effective method developed for such processes.

How Is a Beard Transplant Carried Out?

Beard transplant should not be considered as a process that is similar to hair transplant,  because the beard density varies from one person to another and each patient may chose to have a different appearance.

In cases where the patient has a beard loss in a particular area, the size of the respective area and the density of the beard has to be planned carefully. On the other hand, for a patient with no beard, a successful transplant according to the desired beard density can be performed with 1000-3000 hair roots harvested from the area right above the nape. In addition, undesirable hair follicles on the below part of the neck can be used to enhance the density of the beard and by achieving a permanent hair removal in this area.

Can Women Have Hair Transplants?

As in male patients, hair transplantation can be performed successfully in female patients and satisfactory results are obtained.

Should Hair Transplantation be Applied in Every Type of Hair Loss?

There can be many different factors that may cause a hair loss. The thinning of the hair follicles in an area also can create a sparse appearance in the hair. In situations where no permanent hair loss is the case and rather a hair thinning is observed, the first step before hair transplant surgery is to consider methods such as  Mesotherapy to strengthen the existing hair follicles and prevent shedding.
